Behind the Scenes: Setting Up a Campaign Vehicle Sound System

Behind the Scenes_ Setting Up a Campaign Vehicle Sound System

Campaign trucks and promo vehicles are powerful tools for reaching large crowds — but the sound has to be loud, clear, and mobile. I’ve been part of multiple campaign sound installations across Kenya, especially in busy areas like Nairobi, Kisumu, and Eldoret. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into building a mobile sound system that works on the road.

1. Equipment Selection:
I always start with reliable outdoor speakers or horn speakers, which are built for wide sound dispersion. These can throw sound far and stay intelligible even in noisy, open areas. Amplifiers must be matched to speaker wattage and impedance to avoid burnout. We also use audio players or Bluetooth modules for music playback, plus wireless mic systems for public speeches.

2. Power Management:
Since vehicles can’t rely solely on their internal battery, I install dedicated power sources — typically deep-cycle batteries paired with inverters or small generators. These allow the system to run for hours without interruptions. Surge protectors and proper grounding ensure safety and equipment longevity.

3. Mounting and Cabling:
Installation is more than just placing speakers on a roof. We use custom mounts to keep equipment secure during movement. Cables are carefully routed and protected from heat, rain, and vibration. We also install weatherproof covers for external components.

4. Sound Testing and Tuning:
After setup, I test the system in real-world environments — quiet streets, open fields, and crowded urban areas — to check volume consistency and speech clarity. Based on feedback, I fine-tune the EQ and positioning. It’s not enough to be loud — it has to be understandable.

5. Custom Features:
Depending on the campaign or promotional needs, we can add branding elements, lighting, or even multiple zones with independent volume control. Microphone inputs, AUX lines, Bluetooth connectivity, and siren or jingle playback are commonly requested features.

Whether it’s a political rally, gospel campaign, or a branded marketing event, a mobile sound system is your voice on wheels. I make sure that voice is loud, clear, and unstoppable.
